Lavender Lemonade

The “cute” type spring I’m so fond of finally showed itself this weekend and, lucky for me, I was ready to kick it in high gear for parties on top of parties- it is Fashion Week in MN, if you hadn’t heard! Not to mention few anniversaries to celebrate..

With this outfit, I had to represent everything most important to me (besides me. I kid, not really) in the month of April: the anniversary of Prince’s passing last year…and the release of Beyoncé Giselle Knowles Carter’s now ICONIC visual album, Lemonade. We all know where we were when we heard news of both (Yes, both).

So this was my contribution to their honor. My homage to the GOATs, if you will.

But no one cared ANYTHING about that. Everybody just wanted to know where my earrings were from. Because who in the hell walks around with curtain tassels hanging from there head? 🙋🏾

J/K. Teachers are allowed to tell jokes. Especially ones of the Dad variety.

A few thoughts here: do you ever have a moment when you need something from the corner store, so you throw on the nearest, cleanest  threads and hightail it before you run into someone you know….but then end up taking pictures because why not??

Do you also decide on one of those dress items being part of a Beyoncé costume you have saved for just the *right* occasion (i.e. anytime being the right time)?

…And lastly, is there anything better than every flavor variation of sparkling water? I think you can at least agree with me on that one.

Four Eleven Eighty Seven

Born on a Saturday. 30 years ago..

For my 30th birthday party, the theme was a mash of Big Freedia, Beyonce’s Lemonade and drag queens.

Because these are a few of my favorite things. ❤️😽

For my outfit, I opted for practical over style (I mean, sort of). My top was fun and stretchy enough for movement, without looking too sweaty. The leggings, on the other hand, were just some old workout pants! Granted, they did perfectly match in tone of black. And both feature little mesh inserts. But the real reason I didn’t wear actual pants was for the mere fact that anything else would rip with all the acrobatics I tend to do on the dance floor.

I wish I could take credit for my glorious headdress, but my visionary friend Molly gifted me with it. It sat in good company with my evil eye earrings; But a mere coincidence.

Quite possibly the best party I’ve thrown yet. 30 is keen.

29 Years and 364 Days

But who’s counting..?

I’m entering my 30s in less than 24 hours (Yes, I know! I’m just as surprised as you are. The key is hydration and melanin). As far as my body and my style I make no mistake to inform others that I Don’t Care What You Think, but quite honestly, it took a hell of a lot of time to get there..(more on that in tomorrow’s *Very Special* Birthday Post).

This picture was taken in a post Sunday brunch haze, in what I like to call an off duty outfit. You all have one, right? Perhaps you aren’t in something that’s a signature you, but you couldn’t give less of a crap because you’re tired and just want to be full of hash browns. We’ve all been there, right?

My off duty looks scream ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe/Eff Your Beauty Standards’ almost always. For one, I’m having a lot of fun with green hair, though I get more looks and questions wearing head wraps. Second, I stand firm in my social justice practices; no matter what, you find a bag, a button or a shirt expressing that fact. I won’t give away my tote’s words; just zoom in for the full effect 😉

Birthday Wishes

So my birthday is next Tuesday… And you may know what I like to wear, but do you know the things I like to indulge in? (Probably.) Well.. How about my ever expanding wishlist???

I keep a wishlist of things handy. I’ve done this since college, and it’s changed and grown right along with me.

In college, it was DVD box sets (Hello, MadMen and The Office) before that, it was god awful handbags of any kind. Let’s just say I had a teal phase..

In the “Club” days I forced myself to pretending to like, it was shoes. Heels mostly, but sneakers too-all eye catching, because my clothes usually weren’t. My taste was an unrefined version of me now: a little quirky, brightly colored but always fun. Present day Ness is a little more complex..maybe even a little less nerdy (not true).

Here are my top 3 wishlist items for spring:

I’m super into the bell and puffer sleeve, and lucky for me, they are popping up almost everywhere. What’s bad for me, however..not all sleeves are created equally. I’m super finicky and want something really specific in a bell sleeve dress, top or jumpsuit-yes I said jumpsuit. I have some lofty goals for what I’m looking for, but this dress from Asos is pretty darn close. Plus I absolutely love royal blue. Almost as much as royal purple (who cares if I just made that up).

Polly Nor is a UK illustrator I’ve been mildly obsessed with. Her work is focused on women in their most vulnerable places, doing things JUST for them. They’re dynamic and gritty and real but absolutely gorgeous and I’ve wanted my very own “Too Good For You” (above) for over a year now. Be careful venturing her work and YOUR place of work-much of her art includes nudity. Oh and devil drawings. Lots of devils.

Last but not least: I want a vintage Schwinn bike. Not just any old bike, but a 70s style yellow, blue or gold Varsity. Easy to come by, most or less, but for an amateur biker who knows nothing about cars OR bikes, buying the right one has been difficult. I don’t want to be swindled into just any bike, and it’d be easy. It’s how I  obtained Elizabeth Taylor. (yes, that is my car’s name). She’s easy on the eyes but complex as hell-much like her namesake.

So on this birthday, I may not have everything on my wishlist, but in essence, they’re all present attributes; style, quirk and finesse. The “things” will come and go but I will always have me 🙂

Ps. New ink would also be nice. Know any good tattoo shops??

I love spring. But like, TV spring, or springtime songs. ACTUAL spring is gross. And kind of smelly. I’m an April baby (Whoop Whoop! More on that later), and I’ve seen some cute birthdays and some ugly ones, weather wise. On my 20th birthday, I was granted one 5 foot blizzard. It’s the life you choose, living in Minnesota. My outfits are practical for all but one month, however; and that is solely for April.

I like bold colors and earth tones normally, but in April, I’m in pastels like any church lady grandma. Matter of fact, this blazer gave me such Golden Girl vibes, that I HAD to have it. Blanche, to be specific….which is the opposite of “church” grandma, but whatever.
